明治8年に開校し、戦火を乗り越え、これまで1万5千人以上の児童が通ってきた学校の歴史について、子どもたちが調べ、まとめた内容が廊下いっぱいに掲示されており、感銘を受けました。

また、世の中の課題をSDGsの観点から捉え、自分たちの学校生活に置き換えて学びを深めた内容についても知ることができ、学校教育に希望を感じました。

今年大きな話題になったドキュメンタリー映画「小学校～それは小さな社会～」プロジェクトに携わらせていただいたご縁で、塚戸小学校との関わりをもたせていただき、やはり小学校という場所は、日本人の軸となる大事なものを培う場所なのだと改めて感じています。

今年は小学校のあり方について、たくさん考える機会をいただきました。今後に活かしていきたいです。

I had the honor of attending the 150th anniversary ceremony of Setagaya City Tsukado Elementary School.

I was deeply impressed by the hallway displays filled with research and summaries by the children themselves about the school’s history—a history that began in 1875, survived the ravages of war, and has seen over 15,000 students pass through its doors.

I also learned about how the children approached societal challenges from an SDGs perspective, applying them to their own school life to deepen their learning. This gave me hope for school education.

Through my involvement with the documentary film project “Making of a Japanese,” which garnered significant attention this year, I developed a connection with Tsukado Elementary School. This experience reaffirmed my belief that elementary schools are indeed the place where the essential foundations of Japanese identity are cultivated.

This year has provided me with many opportunities to reflect on the nature of elementary education. I intend to apply these insights moving forward.
